The bustle of Amsterdam seems very distant in this residential enclave in the lee of Vondelpark, but nothing could be further from the truth. In the second half of the 19th century, Willemspark, named after King Willem III, was developed to create a fashionable neighbourhood for the wealthy. This was spearheaded by Jacobus Gerhardus van Niftrik, then Amsterdam’s City Engineer, who wanted to stem the tide of wealthy Amsterdam residents leaving the busy city to find peace and quiet on the coast at Haarlem or in the Gooi and Vecht region.

Now, in 2019, the ‘Willemsparkbuurt’ is just as understated and fashionable as it was in its heyday. Particularly in the relatively small enclave north of Koninginneweg, daily life is characterised by a tranquillity that’s unusual for the city. And yet, everything required for a satisfying urban life is just a short distance away. The immediate vicinity, along Amstelveenseweg and around Cornelis Schuytstraat, is home to a host of pleasant cafés, and you can treat yourself to a different culinary experience every evening in one of the area’s hip or famous restaurants. Amsterdam’s cultural centre, the Museumplein and the Concertgebouw are just five minutes away by bicycle. It is an enormous privilege to be able to live in this wonderful district. The classic herringbone parquetry with decorative edging and the glossy white panelling create a sense of unity, while the ceilings are high and stately.
